Japanese Aurora Tag Tutorial Using Gimp

The kit I used for this is called HEART OF JAPAN, made by AW DESIGN and can be purchased HERE or HERE- proceeds go to the Red Cross to aid in the recovery of Japan.

The tube I chose to use is called Aurora and is by Unholy Vault Designs and can be purchased at PTE. You must use your PTE license when using this tube.

I used a mask from PACK 2 which is FTU over at TallChic D-Zines. You can get them HERE.

Let's get started.

1. Open a new image- canvas size 800 x 800 so you will have plenty of space to work in.

2. Open as new layer paper 6 from the scrapkit- a golden paper. Go to LAYER>TRANSPARENCY>ADD ALPHA CHANNEL.

3. Open as new layer mask 5 from the mask pack. Go to LAYER>SCALE LAYER to 616 x 400. Go to COLORS>INVERT then LAYER>TRANSPARENCY>COLOR TO ALPHA to make it transparent. Right click on this layer in the layers box. Choose Alpha to Selection. Then click on the paper 6 layer in layer box to make it active. Go to SELECT>INVERT and EDIT>CLEAR. Paper 6 should now be your mask. Delete the original mask. Add noise to this layer. Go to FILTERS>NOISE>RGB NOISE and keep the settings at 20/20/20/0.

4. Open element 20 in the kit. Resize to 189 x 328 and position it on the right side. Then duplicate the layer and flip the copy. Position the copy layer on the left side. Both of these layers should be underneath the paper mask layer.

5. Open as layers paper 5 from kit. It is a rich, deep red shade. Do the same procedure as in step 2.

6. Open as layers element 46 from kit... it is a frame with 4 windows. We are going to cut 2 off... Just use the rectangle select tool to crop of the bottom half of this element so you're left with just the top 2 windows... When you have your selected area, just hit EDIT>CLEAR. Add a drop shadow to this by going to FILTERS>LIGHT AND SHADOW>DROPSHADOW and settings at 4/4/9.

7. Use your rectangle select tool again to crop within the existing frames of element 46. Then hit SELECT>INVERT and EDIT>CLEAR. The red paper should now be behind the frame. You see the little space between the 2 windows? Well just use the rectangle select tool again to crop out this part. Now it should look right. There are other ways you can do this, but I find this the fastest and most effective way.

8. With the close up tube, I just moved her between the drop shadow layer and the paper layer. Then used the rectangle select tool to crop out any excess. I gave this layer a drop shadow and also used the rectangle select tool to crop out any excess of the shadow.

9. I found a Japanese proverb that I liked and used Tempus Sans font to type it out. I right clicked on the text layer in layers box, went to SELECT>GROW by 2 and added a new layer, with which I filled with white within the marching ants/selected area... then I added a drop shadow with the same privious settings.

10. Add your copyright info to your tag. Include the copyright symbol, artist name, artist's website, as well as your license number, if applicable.

11. With the second tube, rescale it to 279 x 448 and position it to the right side.

12. I used a font called Matura MT Script Capitals for the name on the tag. Just like the proverb in step 9, you add layers and fill the selections with the color. I did white text, grew by 2 filled new layer with black, grew by 3 and used a deep burnt orange shade for the next layer. I added noise to this layer, then added a drop shadow with same settings.

I hope you liked this tutorial! Thanks for viewing :) xoxox

"Scream Bitches" Tag Tutorial

The template used in this tag was created by me and Salsa and is a Creative Misfits Exclusive! To get it, click HERE. The mask I used is another Creative Misfits Exclusive! It was made by Kaci and you can get it HERE.
The scrapkit I used is made by Crystal's Creations. It is called DRAMA BITCHES and you can purchase it HERE.
The tube I chose to use is by Zlata_M and is called SCREAM and is full of so many fun layers to pick and choose from!!! I had a blast with it, and definitely recommend buying it. You need a license to use it from PFD and can get it HERE.

This is for more experienced Gimp users, but I will try to make it as easy as possible to understand.

Let's make the tag!
1. Open up the template. Delete the wordart, and any text with it...
2. Open up the mask and scale it to 914 x 777. Then go to COLORS>INVERT and LAYER>TRANSPARENCY>COLOR TO ALPHA. Add noise by going to FILTERS>NOISE>RGB NOISE and keep the settings at 20/20/20/0. Make sure it's positioned where you like it, as the bottom layer in layers box.
3. Open the splat in the kit and put it on upper left side of template, but a layer above the mask. Then duplicate this layer and use the rotate tool. Rotate to 55 degrees. Move this copy to bottom right side of template, also a layer above the mask. Merge the two splat layers when you find them to be where you like them.
4. Open the fence in the kit and position it above the black circle right layer in template. Duplicate the fence and flip the copy. Make the copy invisible by hitting the eye to the left of the layer in the layers box. We're working with the visible fence layer for the moment. You need to right click on the black circle right in layers box and choose Alpha to Selection. Then make sure that the visible fence layer is the active layer by clicking on it in layers box. Go to SELECT>INVERT and EDIT>CLEAR. The fence should be proportioned within that black circle right now. So you will want to repeat all these steps with the fence copy layer, so make it visible and redo all these steps... Then when you have them both cropped and positioned right, merge the 2 layers. Then move the opacity slider over to 37.
5. Open the sparkles in the kit and position it behind the pink square in the template. Duplicate and flip the copy and put the copy over on the other side, under the green square in the template. They just want to be poking out far enough to add a touch of bling :)
6. Open as layers paper 4 and paper 11 in the kit. You need to get these papers to have a transparent background so click on one paper at a time and go to LAYER>ADD ALPHA CHANNEL. Then position paper 4 under the green square in template and paper 11 under the pink square in template. The next step is to use the magic wand/fuzzy select tool and click inside the green square. Make sure when you do this that the green square IS the active layer- it needs to be the blue highlighted layer in layers box. Then you will see marching ants within the inside of the green square. Go to SELECT>GROW by 3. Then go to SELECT>INVERT and click on the paper 4 layer to make it active. Go to EDIT>CLEAR and the paper 4 will now be under the green square- basically filling it. Repeat these steps with the pink square and paper 11.

7. Open your tube of choice. With the SCREAM tube, you will want to link all your layers together and then use the move tool to drag them down so they are able to be viewed. You can increase your canvas size if you want, but there really is no reason to... Delete all the background layers that come along with the tube. You will also want to delete: red nails, green nails, tattoo 1, pierced 5, pierced 1, blue hair, red hair, scream pants, and scream finger. Click on the box where the eye is to make all the rest of the layers visible. Then click on the black nails layer to make it active and use the eraser tool to erase the second fingernail. Merge all these layers together, except the copyright info layer (which should be the top/first layer). The tube will be all in one layer now... Duplicate it twice so there are a total of 3 layers.

8. Move one of the layers over under the pink square layer and the paper 11. Add a drop shadow- FILTERS>LIGHT AND SHADOW>DROPSHADOW with settings at 8, 8, 16. Use the magic wand/fuzzy select tool to click inside the pink square layer like we did in step 6. Do not grow it tho. Just click in there then go to SELECT>INVERT and EDIT>CLEAR. This tube layer will be in that pink square now. Adjust the opacity slider to 72 percent. Repeat these same steps with the second tube copy, but over on the green square side... Make sure that you add the dropshadow then flip the layer before following the rest of the steps. And then adjust the opacity slider to 84 percent with this layer.

9. With the third tube copy, go to LAYER>SCALE LAYER and scale to 322 x 627. Add the dropshadow with same settings. Merge these two layers and set it in the middle of the template.

10. Take the copywrite info and rewrite it in a smaller font, make sure you use the copywrite symbol, artist's name, website and license number. Place this at the bottom of the tube you just worked with in previous step.

11. Open as layers paper 2. LAYER>TRANSPARENCY>ADD ALPHA CHANNEL. Right click on green front circle, Alpha to Selection. Click on paper layer, SELECT>INVERT and EDIT>CLEAR. Delete the green front circle.

12. Open as layers the drama flames. Duplicate it. Then try to fit them both in as best as you can within the black front circle. Right click on black front circle, Alpha to Selection. SELECT>INVERT and EDIT>CLEAR on each one of these flame layers. Then use the rectangle tool to cut off the alternate sides, because some might stick out just a little. This may take a couple tries to get just right, so just go to EDIT>UNDO if you mess up... This is also a REALLY good place to make sure you save your work. Save it as an .xcf file so you can come back in and work with it layer by layer.

13. Open as layers the brad that is green and pink in the scrap kit. Duplicate it. Move each brad to each side of template, like in my example.

14. I used a font called aaaiight! I typed it out in hot pink, right click, Alpha to Selection. SELECT>GROW by 3 and added a new layer, used bucket fill to fill that with black, then did that again and filled the next layer with white. Add a drop shadow with same settings as used above.

I hope you had fun with this tag, I'd love to see your go at it :) Feel free to mail it to me HERE. Thanks for viewing :)

Gothic Obsessions Gimp Tutorial

For this tag, I used a kit called Gothic Obsessions by Crystal's Creations that was part of a collab. You can find an AWESOME deal on the entire collab, just click HERE to find out about it!

I used an exclusive tube by Keith Garvey named Sonya, only offered at the Tagger's Den forum. Alot of challenges and creative ability there, feel free to go check it out yourself!

You can find non exclusives of Keith Garvey's art, just head over to PTE.

The mask I used is FTU and from Creationz by Witchy's Heart, it's #16 and you can download it from her blog, HERE. Make sure you check out all her other amazing masks while you're there :)

To get started...

1. Open a new canvas- 800 x 800. The background will come up white, to make it transparent, go to LAYERS>TRANSPARENCY>COLOR TO ALPHA.

2. Open as a new layer the mask. Go to LAYER>TRANSPARENCY>COLOR TO ALPHA.

3. Open as a new layer paper 8 in kit. Go to LAYERS>TRANSPARENCY>ADD ALPHA CHANNEL. Then right click on the mask layer in layers box and choose Alpha to Selection. Click on the paper layer in layers box again to make it active. Go to SELECT>INVERT then EDIT>CLEAR. This paper is now exactly like the mask. Adjust the opacity slider to about 45% on this paper mask layer.

4. Open as layers element 15 in the kit (black frame). Then right click on it in layers box and Alpha to Selection. SELECT>GROW by 6. Add a new layer then use the bucket fill tool to fill it in with a red shade. Add noise to this layer by going to FILTERS>NOISE>RGB NOISE and keep the settings at 20/20/20/0.

5. Open as layers paper 11 and use the ellipse select tool to create a circle inside of the black frame (element 15) then go to LAYER>TRANSPARENCY>ADD ALPHA CHANNEL and SELECT>INVERT and EDIT>CLEAR.

6. Open as layers your tube of choice. This one came with 2 sizes, I just tucked the larger tube layer under the red noise layer we made in step 4 and above the paper layer in step 5. I flipped the layer and then used the putthe opacity slider over to 60%. With the other tube, I just moved her over the the right and gave her a drop shadow by going to FILTERS>LIGHT AND SHADOW> DROPSHADOW and the settings at 8/8/16.

7. Open as layers element 24 (the wire fencing) and then right click on the black frame (element 15) and choose Alpha to Selection. Go to SELECT>INVERT and EDIT>CLEAR. This will leave the fencing just within the black frame. Adjust the opacity slider to 55%.

8. With the star in the tube layers- move it to the left side and then duplicate it and flip the copy using the flip tool. Keep these here for now.

9. Open as layers element 7 (wired heart)in kit and scale down to 157 x 126. Duplicate and flip like you did in step 8.

10. Open as layers element 37 in kit (red rose) and scale to 150 x 136 and then do the same like step 8 & 9.

11. Open as layers element 34 in kit (black rose) and scale down to 214 x 194. This will be the center of these elements... then use each double of all the others in steps 10, 9 and 8 to place around it... in that order outwards. On the left side like my example.

12. Open as layers element 35 from kit (candle) and scale to 141 x 326. Set it in front of the black rose (element 34).

13. I used a font called Maniac in a shade of red. I had to type each letter out separetly and then set them where I liked it. Then I merged those layers together so that the text was all in one layer... I added noise (see how in step 4) with the same settings. Then I right clicked on that layer in layer box and chose Alpha to Selection. Then go to SELECT>GROW by 2 and added a new layer and filled it in with black. Then I added a drop shadow with the same settings as in step 6.

14. Make sure to put the correct credit to your tag- artist name, website and license number (if applicable) must be on your tag. Artists work hard to make tubes and posers and crediting their work is appreciated and just common courtesy...

I hope you like this tag and have fun trying this tutorial :) xoxox

Love Whispers Tag Tutorial

This tag is one most beginner Gimp users can easily do. To make it you need the following:

LOVE WHISPERS scrapkit by Wicked Princess Scraps, which you can purchase HERE or HERE.
And I used the free tube called HOLIDAY STALKER made by Ismael Rac, which you need a license to use, and can get at www.xeracx.net.

Let's get started...

1. Open the double heart frame in the scrap kit. This should get your canvas size just right- 786 x 550

2. Open as layers the diamond scatter in the kit and flip it. Scale down the layer to just around 720 x 699 then use the rotate tool about 30 degrees to get it in the right position. Duplicate this layer and flip that then line it up appropriately, and merge the two layers. Click and drag this layer to the bottom of layers box.

3. Open paper 11 from scrapkit as a new layer. Move under the frame layer. Click on frame layer to make it active in layers box. Use the magic wand tool (fuzzy select) and click within the frame. Hold down the shift button and click on the other side of the heart frame. Go to SELECT>GROW by 6. Then click on the paper layer to make it active. Go to LAYER>TRANSPARENCY>ADD ALPHA CHANNEL then to SELECT>INVERT and EDIT>CLEAR. The papoer should be in the frame only.

4. Open your tube of choice as a new layer, the one I used comes with 2 sizes, one close-up, which I flipped then framed within the frame just like the paper. The other layerm I resized to 172 x 363... I also added a drop shadow to this layer- go to FILTERS>LIGHT AND SHADOW>DROP SHADOW and change the settings to 4/4/9.

5. Open the satin bow as a new layer, scale down to 240 x 242.

6. Open the heartkey as a new layer and scale down to 105 x 338. Add a drop shadow with the previous settings to this layer.

7. Open as layers the bow and scale to 300 x 300.

8. Don't forget to add your copyright info to your tag. Include the copyright symbol, name

of artist, artist's website and your license number to use their art.

9. I used a font called champagne as the text for the name. I wrote it in white, used the color picker tool to get a good blue shade (from bow) and right clicked on the text layer and chose Alpha to Selection. Then I went to SELECT>GROW by 2 and added a new layer, with which I filled in with the blue shade I picked a moment ago using the bucket fill tool. Then added a drop shadow.

10. Save your tag as an .xcf file first so you can go back and change anything if you need to... then when you are happy with the way it looks save as a .png for a transparent background.

I hope you enjoyed this tutorial :) xoxox

Freebie Cluster Frame and Seductress Tag Tut

Crys from Creative Scraps by Crys was kind enough to let me offer this cluster frame! I used her kit, Letters From Home, to make it. Click on the preview to download from 4shared and please leave a comment if you do! And this cluster frame is used in the tag below so keep reading for the Gimp Tutorial :)

To make the tag below, you also will need to get the kit called LETTERS FROM HOME, which can be purchased HERE or HERE.

I used the gorgeous tube called SEDUCTRESS by Tatjana Willms which requires a license to use. You can find it at Dreamscape Imaging, just click HERE.
I also used FTU circle masks from the Creative Misfits. You can get them HERE!

Let's get started!

1. Open up as a new layer the Paper 1 from kit. Go to LAYER>TRANSPARENCY>ADD ALPHA CHANNEL. Resize to 700 x 700. Duplicate this layer.

2. Open as layers the circle 5 mask by Caroline and resize to 750 x 750. Also open the mask by Aqua 140 and resize that to 850 x 850. For each mask, you need to click on their layer in layers box and go to COLORS>INVERT and LAYER>TRANSPARENCY>COLOR TO ALPHA. Then you will want to right click on one and choose ALpha to Selection. Then go to SELECT>INVERT and click on the paper 1 layer in the layers box to make it active and go back up to EDIT>CLEAR. Now that mask is made with the paper. So delete the original black mask. And repeat this step with the next mask.
3. Open paper 5 from kit. Resize to 500 x 500.

4. Open scattered hearts 2 and scattered hearts 4. Resize scattered hearts 4 to 598 x 484. Position them directly beside the hearts 2. Merge these two layers and place them appropriately.

5. Open as layers the cluster frame.

6. Use the Ellipse Select Tool to get a circle within the frame. Go to SELECT>INVERT and then click on paper 5 layer in layers box. Go to EDIT>CLEAR then SELECT>NONE. The paper should now only be in your frame.

7. Open your tube of choice. Place it appropriately. Add a drop shadow to it. Go to FILTERS>LIGHT AND SHADOW>DROP SHADOW and settings at 4,4,9. Change the opacity slider in layers box to 41%.

8. Make sure to put the correct copyright info on your tag. The artist's name, website, and license number if applicable must always be on your tag. Many tubes come with the artist name and website credit info already to make it easy for you!

9. Use the color select dropper tool to get the color from the flowers in the frame. Then type your text in with this color. I used a font called French Script MT. Next, just right click on the text in the layers box and go to SELECT>GROW by 2 and then add a new layer. Use the color drop tool to get the color from the gold part of the tube and then use the bucket fill tool to fill the new layer in with this shade... This is a good place to save your work just in case you need to come back to fix anything. Save as an .xcf Then come back and merge your text layers together. Go to FILTER>DECOR>ADD BEVEL with the thickness at 5. Then add a drop shadow to this. I had the settings at 2,2,6.

I hope you liked the tutorial! Thanks for coming by :) xoxox

"A Rose in Poisoned Rain" Tag Tutorial for Gimp

For this tag, you will want to get the scrapkit called POISONED RAIN which was created by Wicked Princess Scraps and can be purchased HERE or HERE.

You will need your tube of choice. I am using the art of Cha Chas which is a free download from My PSP Tubes, however it does require a license to use, which you get by registering... just click HERE.

You also want to snag all those awesome and free Circle Masks from the Creative Misfits! You can get them HERE!

Let's get started :)

1. Create a new image. Make your canvas 800 x 800. It should come up with a white background. Go to LAYER>TRANSPARENCY>COLOR TO ALPHA to get it transparent.

2. Open as layers your tube. Delete all layers except the credit and the cut out tube.

3. Open as layers paper 11 from scrapkit and go to LAYER>TRANSPARENCY>ADD ALPHA CHANNEL then got to LAYER>SCALE LAYER to 500 x 500. Keep this behind tube layer.

4. Open as layers Bling Bracket from scrapkit. Place it to frame the tube but behind it... then use the magic wand tool and click inside this bracket. Go to SELECT>GROW by 3. Then click on the paper layer to make it active and go to SELECT>INVERT and EDIT>CLEAR. Your paper should now be inside the bracket only!

5. Open as layers the Splatter from kit. Flip it. Then position that first splatter to top right corner. Make this the bottom layer. Duplicate and flip the copy. Move the copy to the left top side of the bracket. Then merge both the splatter and it's copy. Duplicate that and then use the rotate tool and rotate to 180 degrees. Move this to the bottom part of the bracket.

6. Open up the mask- It's in Aqua's folder and it's # 140. Resize to 700 x 700. Go to COLOR>INVERT and then LAYER>TRANSPARENCY>COLOR TO ALPHA. Then we're gonna make it the same pink as the paper... so just go up to COLORS>COLORIZE until you find a good shade. Add noise by going to FILTERS>NOISE>RGB NOISE and settings at 20/20/20/0. This mask layer will be in the very back (bottom) layer.

7. Open as layers the Necklace from kit and resize to 287 x 258. Position it over the tube's neck.

8. Open as layers the Chrone Swirl from kit and resize to 297 x 200. Duplicate and flip copy. Move these to cover the cut edges of shoulders of tube.

9. Open as layers the Heartbow and resize to 98 x 92. Place this on a part of the chrome swirl. Then duplicate and flip the copy and place on alternate side.

10. Take the credit info from the tube, add your license number to it and right click on the text layer. ALPHA TO SELECTION then SELECT>GROW by 2 and add a new layer. Fill this layer with white. Position your credit info so it is easily legible.

11. Type in the text you want. I used a font called Vanessa. And just like in step 10, I made 2 new layers and filled weach one. First was a light grey and second is picked with the dropper tool to get the color from the paper. Add noise to the pink color. Then click on grey text layer in layers box to make it active. Go to FILTERS>DECOR>ADD BEVEL and 5 for thickness. Click on the pink text layer again and then add a drop shadow byt FILTERS>LIGHT AND SHADOW>DROP SHADOW and put the settings at 4/4/9. Link all your texts and position them appropriately.

12. Add a drop shadow to your tube witht the same settings.

13. Use the rectangle selection tool to crop your image then go to IMAGE>CROP TO SELECTION. SELECT>NONE then save your image. Save as an .xcf so you can go back in if you need to change anything. Save final copies as .png.

Thanks for viewing this tut, hope you liked it :) xoxox

Freya & Funky Punky Emo Gimp Tutorial

This is a tag that almost any beginner Gimper can make :)

All you need is the following:

The kit called Funky Punky Emo by Crystal's Creations- you can get that by visiting her blog HERE (grab the freebie add on in the blog train while you're there)

The tube of your choice. I used Freya Langford Sidebottom's tube called Harmageddon, which requires a license to use from Dreamscape Imaging, and you can purchase it HERE.

The mask # 384 from http://insatiabledreams.net

Let's make that tag!

1. Open up paper 2 from the kit. Go to LAYER>TRANSPARENCY>ADD ALPHA CHANNEL

2. Open the mask as a new layer. Resize 600 x 600. Go to COLORS>INVERT then to LAYER>TRANSPARENCY>COLOR TO ALPHA. Then right click on this layer in layers box. Choose Alpha to Selection. Then you want to click on the paper layer to make it active. And go to SELECT>INVERT then EDIT>CLEAR. SELECT>NONE to deselect. You should now have the shape of the mask with the paper. Delete the original mask layer.

3. Use the circle selection tool to make a circle inside this new mask you made. Add a new layer and fill it with black to make the circle. Then while it's still selected, go to SELECT>SHRINK by 20 and then hit EDIT>CLEAR. Deselect. Right click on this hoop (hollow circle) layer you made. Choose Alpha to Selection. Then go to SELECT>GROW by 5. Add a new layer. Fill this new layer with a teal color. Go to FILTERS> NOISE>RGB NOISE and keep the levels at 20/20/20/0. Deselect. Add a drop shadow to this layer. Keep the settings at standard. 8/8/16 is fine.

4. Open as layers the funky punky dots from the kit and resize to 658 x 606. Duplicate this layer then rotate the copy 90 degrees. Keep these 2 layers behind the mask layer.

5. Add your tube. This tube comes with an awesome close up that I put inside the frame we made with the circle in step 3. Just flip and position her where you like it then use the circle selection tool to crop out the excess, then tuck this tube layer between the drop shadow and paper/mask layer we made in step 2. With the full standing tube, add a drop shadow with 4/4/9 as your settings.

6. Open as layers the electric (lightning bolt) from the kit and resize to 127 x 370.

7. Open as layers the chain (music note charm) from the kit.

8. Open as layers the skull star and resize to 157 x 156.

9. Open as layers the brad (blue one) and then take these 4 layers you just opened and position them on top of one another :)

10. DON'T FORGET YOUR COPYRIGHT INFO, add the name of the artist, website and any license numbers you have!

11. Add your text. I used a font called Battlelines. Then I grew it by 2, added a new layer and filled it with black, grew that layer by 2 and added another layer and filled with the teal color we used in the circle hoop frame from step 3 then gave it noise and finally, added a drop shadow of 4/4/9.

12. Save your work as a .xcf if you make a mistake you can go back and fix it. Then save it as a .png. Make sure you have a transparent background when you do- just click on the background layer and then go to LAYER>TRANSPARENCY>COLOR TO ALPHA.

I hope you had fun making this tag :) xoxox
